On Saturday night last in Cunniffe's Bar in Cloone, Cloone
GAA launched their Park Development Draw, which is being run to help
complete the current development work going on in St Mary’s Park in Cloone.
The Cloone club is currently going through a significant re-development of
their grounds with over €300,000 in works to be completed in the coming two
years. Already in 2005 over €130,000 has been spent and work on phase one is
due for completion before the end of the current year.
The major part of the project to date will be the floodlighting of the
grounds in compliance with the current standards used for playing nighttime
games. This is a huge undertaking and Cloone will be the first club in Co.
Leitrim to have in place such facilities and one of only a handful in the
province. This is a very positive development for the GAA community not just
in Cloone but for all GAA fans in Co. Leitrim. Night time fixtures are
currently being embraced all over the country and offer a very practical
solution to fixture congestion problems currently being experienced.
Counties like Leitrim with a lot of players based outside the county could
benefit greatly from such an initiative. In order to deliver these projects
the Cloone club is currently starting a major fundraising drive that they
intend will put in place the necessary finance to allow them to deliver this
project.
Despite receiving a significant allocation of funding under the Sports
Capital Programme the club still has to meet the shortfall, which is quite
substantial giving the scale of the project being undertaken. To meet this
shortfall a fundraising draw has been organised with €10,000 in prize money
to be won. The draw is limited to 400 entries and has a total of ten cash
prizes on offer. Tickets for the draw cost €100 and are available from
officials or club members in Cloone or from club secretary Louie Brennan on
086-2628618. This is the first fundraising draw Cloone has run in over ten
years and the club are hopeful they can count on the support of Leitrim GAA
supporters for their efforts.
